"Education is the most powerful tool you can use to change the world."- Nelson Mandela
Educational Philosophy
One day, I was catching the bus home from school around the time middle schools let out. I got on the bus and sat behind a small group of about 3-4 kids. There was an elderly man on the bus whose stop was coming up. He proceeded to get off the bus. After he gets off one of the kids opens the window and spits on the man’s head as he walks by the bus. This instantly angered me, right as I was about to address the kid on the issue, a lady beats me to it. It was that single event that made me realize something. As a teacher it is not only my responsibility to make sure students can read, write, add, subtract, etc., but it is also my responsibility to teach them skills and values that can be used beyond the classroom. These include teaching them right from wrong, and building a good moral compass for each student. I will do this by being a great role model to my students. As a teacher i will teach students to respect themselves and respect others. I will teach them the benefits of caring for one another and working together. I will do this by showing examples through my lessons and reading books to them that teach these lessons.
The Primary job of a teacher is to educate, and make sure a student is where he/she is supposed to be academically, but I also believe that without the proper guidance and life lessons, being academically proficient is meaningless. I believe this is a teacher’s moral obligation because, we as teachers, for the most part, are the most influential people in our students lives. They Usually spend more time with us than they do with their own parents or guardian. So why not assist in building a good character in our students. They, in turn will teach those great character traits to others and be good role models to them.
There are so many ways to teach students in the classroom. I plan on teaching students in a variety of ways. I do feel that implementing technology into my teachings is a great way to excite young learners. kids of today are much more tech savvy than the children of my generations and earlier. I believe that integrating something that kids are familiar with and actually get excited about using only makes teaching them easier. Using tools such as apps and internet will give me more of a variety of ways to teach subjects. Using technology also helps with all different types of learners such as visual, musical and, hands on learners. Even though i am strongly for integrating technology into the classroom, I am also for some of the traditional ways of teaching. Some of the most fundamental skills come from traditional teaching skills, like learning how to write, and using a dictionary. Some of these skills technology can’t teach you, and that is why having a balance of both in the classroom is very crucial.
